Should I Inside Mount Blinds or Outside Mount Blinds?

As you browse the wide variety of window treatments on the market, you’ll find that blinds remain one of the most popular and versatile styles available. Maybe that’s because they come in such many different materials and styles, from wood, faux wood, and metal horizonal blinds or vertical blinds made of vinyl, fabric, and other materials.

One question many homeowners ask when it comes time to select and install their blinds is whether to mount them inside or outside the window frame. At Innuwindow, we are proud to carry a vast selection of window blinds, and our window treatment experts are here to discuss when it is best to choose inside mount blinds inside or outside mount blinds and the benefits of each installation style.

Inside Mount Blinds

You’ll most commonly find that blinds are installed within the window’s frame for a clean look. Your blinds can be attached to the window frame’s top or sides with clips or brackets that attach tightly to your windows. This mounting style is best suited for window frames that have adequate depth for the dimensions of the blind. This type of mounting certainly offers a more minimalist look.

Inside mounts are also excellent if you have decorative window molding because the mount is flush with the trim, so it will not cover decorative accents.

Outside Mount Blinds

Outside blinds are mounted on the wall or the window trim above the blinds or to a top treatment. It’s best to mount blinds on the outside if the window frame does not have the depth required for an inside mount. Outside-mounted blinds will typically block more light and even increase insulating properties. If your windows have unsightly trim, an outside mount will help camouflage the flaws in your window, leaving you with a fresh, clean look. An outside mount is also suitable for windows that are not centered on the wall or misshapen.

If you want your windows to appear higher, consider mounting your blinds several inches above the window’s top frame. This will give the illusion of height. We also recommend an outside mount when window frames are too shallow for mounting hardware to be installed or when there are obstructions like window cranks, security sensors, tile, or trim that prevents your treatments from lowering.
