More of Our Favorite Bay Window Treatments

Bay windows are one of our favorite architectural features because they add an elevated aesthetic to the interior and exterior of your home—bay windows add to your interior. You can easily turn a bay window into a reading nook with pillows or build a ledge with a small terrestrial garden for light-loving plants. Bay windows also bring excellent curb appeal, making your home more desirable for potential buyers if you plan to put it on the market.

Previously, we wrote a guide to covering your bay windows with shutters, Roman shades, and drapery. Bay windows come in many styles, and finding the right window treatment can be challenging, but that’s when Innuwindow can assist. Today, we discuss more of our favorite bay window treatments.

Different Treatments for Bay Windows by Style

All bay windows are not created equally! There are several different types of bay window styles, each different from the other based on the shape and number of the windows that make up the bay.

  • Traditional bay windows project outward from the main wall of the building at a distinct angle or in a smooth curve. Typically, each bay is composed for 3 or more window panels.
    • Angled Bay Windows feature a large central windowpane flanked by two (or more) smaller side units set at angles to the main wall. This is a boxier and classic style that creates a hexagonal footprint.
    • Curved or Bow Windows features four or more individual windowpanes joined together to form a gentle, continuous curve or arc that projects from the wall. This is a smoother, more-modern style that creates a semicircular footprint.
  • Box windows project slightly outward from the main wall in a simple, box-like shape, usually shallower than an angled or bow bay. With clean modern lines and a smooth geometric shape, box windows contain flat glass areas facing forward and to the sides.
  • Picture windows generally don’t project from the wall. They are often large panes of glass fixed in one space with the window itself flat to the wall and undivided for an uninterrupted, expansive view.

  • Cellular Shades offer excellent insulation for your bay windows and diffuse light beautifully. Plus, they are available in cordless & top-down/bottom-up operation styles that work well for all types (Angled, Box, Picture) using individual panels. Top-down/bottom-up control is ideal over window seats.
  • Solar Shades give a clean minimalist look to your box or bay window. These screen roller shades offer UV protection and view-through while reducing glare. For the perfect fit, choose individual panels for each pane. Complex curves are challenging—but not impossible!
  • Panel-Track Blinds are made of large, flat fabric panels that mount to the ceiling or wall and glide smoothly for a sleek, contemporary look. Curved tracks can be custom-bent to follow the exact contour of a bow window. This style also works well for Box Bays and large Picture Windows, because individual panels stack neatly and out of the way.

Automated Bay Window Treatments

Motorization is essential for for hard-to-reach windows (high bays, over deep furniture), large/heavy treatments, or simply for convenience and modern integration (smart home). We highly recommend automated styles for all bay types, especially large, complex, or high installations.

Special Considerations for Bay Windows

Mounting Your Bay Window Shades

Inside Mount means that your window treatment is attached within the window recess for a clean look that allows the window sill to remain usable. For best fit, your windows should be relatively square across all windows in the bay. It can get tricky on angled sides where depth varies.

Outside Mount means that your window covering is attached to the wall, ceiling, or trimwork outside the recess to conceal uneven window frames or shallow depths and offer maximum coverage. This mounting style can accommodate both individual panels or continuous treatments like vertical blinds or panels.

Individual Panels vs. Continuous Treatments

Individual Panels mean that one window treatment covers one window section to accommodate different angles and allow for independent operation of each section. This is especially good for picture windows and curved bow windows.

Continuous Treatments means that one system spans multiple windows for a unified, streamlined look and easier one-touch operation. This is not suitable for sharply angled bays.

Special Considerations for Window Seats

If you have window seats, your window treatments must allow the seat to be usable. Top-Down/Bottom-Up operation and motorized window treatments are an excellent option here. Outside mounting ensures shades clear the seat back.

Bay Window Hardware & Material Challenges

  • Curves: Standard straight tracks won’t work. Some flexible continuous cord guides work for certain shades. Custom-bent tracks for panel track blinds are an excellent solution for curved bays.
  • Brackets often need extensions or special mounting plates to sit flush on angles for outside mounts. Inside mounts also require precise measurements at each unique angle.
  • Consider your fabric options depending on your needs. For light filtration and UV protection, screen fabrics may be an excellent choice for those seeking to retain a view even if the shades need to remain closed. Plus, an opaque liner on a dual roller helps to provide privacy when required.
